The Best Definition of a Typical Cat

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

How many times have you heard that the typical cat is a predator? More times than you can imagine. But when you are trying to come up with the definition of a typical cat surely it is better to study the overall habits of a cat and come up with the best summary. For starters, what does a cat do during a typical day? Here is my list of the things that acts do:

• They purr.

• They sleep.

• They chase moving objects.

• They eat.

• They sleep some more.

I think the most common activities are sleeping and purring. From kittens to senior cats, purring is the earliest most easily distinguishable hallmark of all cats.

All Cats Purr

Whilst purring is common to all cats, it is not always indicative of its being happy. Sometimes, cats purr when they are distressed or sick. Some scientists believe that cats use purring as a mechanism to calm itself down in much the same way humans do during meditation. When they purr they produce similar brainwaves to the human ‘alpha wave’ patterns, which induce a feeling of inner calm. There have been recent suggestions that having a purring act on your lap will have a calming effect on you as well. In other words, the benefits of purring can be transferred. Many nursing homes for the elderly are keeping cats as pets for their residents with beneficial effects being noted.

Cats can sleep for up to sixteen hours a day as well as taking catnaps of ten or fifteen minutes at a time during periods of activity. Many cats also love catnip plant and will munch at it and roll around in it and, to all appearances, appear to be addicted to it. Any change in behavior should be carefully observed and may require a visit to the vet if you become concerned.

Your cat might seem to be an unusually good climber. This is typical of al cats. It is here that the similarity to a predator role is seen most clearly. From a high vantage point, the cat can observe the movement and presence of possible prey. They do this from a position of safety as they have excellent all round vision and can stay out of the way of danger. I think the best way to think of a cat is not so much as a predator, but an independent animal keeping up its hunting skills so they will always be prepared for the possibility that they may be abandoned by their owners. They maintain their independence and their predator behavior is nothing more than this.

Anaconda Snakes Today- Updating News

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

Anaconda snakes, for sure, conjures up an image of a gigantic, black, serpentine creature slithering in mud and constricting a hapless creature to death. You are not to be blamed for this. Instead, blame those numerous movie directors and novelists who, thanks to their imagination or lack of it, portrayed these docile creatures as vileness epitomized.

Urban legends and rumors are awash with horror tales of anaconda snakes gobbling up innocent kids, regurgitating and re-swallowing their victims thereby giving them a slow and painful death and so on and so forth. So much for the creativity of human brain! Ask a biologist and you will get a drastically different image, an image of a docile, fearful and reclusive creature tucked away in the dense forests of South America.

Classified as members of the boa family, anaconda snakes represent one of the lowermost strata in the pyramid of evolution. Found naturally in the dense tropical forests of South America, these serpentine creatures are worlds one of the biggest constrictors. Anaconda snakes come in two distinct and attractive colors, dull yellow and green. Wet and tropical climates, dense forests and undergrowth, and abundance of food are what make the ideal habitat for these visually majestic snakes.

In this era of instant gratification and consumerism, you do not need to go all the way to the dense forests of Trinidad or the swamps of Amazon to achieve the glory of viewing an anaconda alive. All The Secrets About Goldfish Care

Monday, February 26th, 2007

One of the most important aspects of keeping goldfish is being fully adept in the area of goldfish care. Unfortunately these fish are well known for their ability to catch a multitude of diseases such as Ick and fin rot, which are two of the most common. It’s highly important that you familiarize yourself in the area of goldfish care before you decide to purchase your own fish.

So many people are constantly asking me why they have to keep buying new goldfish all the time and I always ask them what their dedication to goldfish care is. What I find is this, most people don’t actually follow the 3 simple rules of goldfish care and they are:

Rule Number One Of Goldfish Care

Keep your tank clean at all times. If you can’t afford to by a high powered filter, which is most people, than you must make sure you are cleaning your tank ever week. If you aren’t doing this now than you better start because this is one of the major reasons why goldfish become infected with deadly diseases. Fin rot is one of the most common results of an unclean tank. If you are one of those people who doesn’t clean your tank weekly than go take a look at the tails on your goldfish. More than likely you will notice there are many holes and parturition on the ends of the tails.

Rule Number Two Of Goldfish Care

Feed your goldfish once daily. Again most people tend to feed their goldfish too often. This is one of the worst things you can do to your goldfish. Unfortunately goldfish will eat until they kill themselves and many people ask me why their fish suddenly pass even though they seemed completely healthy. More than likely overeating was the cause. Just take a look at them, unless you have a pregnant fish, there’s no reason why you should have a fat fish unless you’re feeding them more than once a day.

Rule Number Three of Goldfish Care

Always clean any external object you plan to place in your tank. You may think you’re doing everything right, you clean your tank weekly, you’re feeding your fish once daily, but then suddenly after you place a new object inside the tank, one of your goldfish dies. What more than likely has happened is that with the object, came a certain disease from the outside air that unfortunately was deadly for your goldfish. To prevent this from occurring, always make sure you disinfect and clean any new object you add to the tank. That way you’ll be reducing the risk of your goldfish catching any unwanted diseases.

Follow the three rules of goldfish care and you’ll have happy healthy goldfish for quite some time to come.

Are You An Animal Lover

Sunday, February 25th, 2007

Some people almost seem to run a veritable zoo from their home. They often have several dogs, a cat or two, perhaps a rabbit, and maybe a guinea pig. Then again, there are those people who would not have an animal in the house. These folks will tell you that they want nothing to do with a pet and that they are not at all interested in adding a non human member to their families.

In reality, all people are probably animal people at some level. There seems to be a natural bond between humans and animals that almost everyone experiences at one time or another. Those who proclaim their distaste for pet ownership are probably not really aversive to animals; they just dont make a great connection with traditional pets. Thats perfectly acceptable, of course.

The dog many be mans best friend, but that does not mean each and every man has to love it! Unfortunately, we often allow our perception of dealing with animals to be governed by a limited perspective regarding pets.

For most people, the term pet means dogs and cats. Those are the two most popular forms of house pets. These animals are perfectly suited as human companions in general, but many people just dont seem to get along with them. Those folks may say they are not animal orientated, but they might not feel that way if they looked into some alternative pets that are available.

The realm of pets is not just a matter of cats and dogs. There are literally hundreds of other great pet options. Many of those who dont feel a connection with the cats and dogs can find a perfect match among the tiny pet alternatives that are available.

So how about a small pet. Many small, easily manageable pets will fit with anyones lifestyle while providing companionship and many enjoyable hours. These small pet friends run the gamut of species and personality, meaning there is probably a great option available for everyone. Even the most hardcore anti animal person is often surprised to discover his or her ability to develop a meaningful kinship with a small pet.

Those who prefer a quiet pet and who do not particularly want to be able to pat an animal may enjoy an aquarium. The soothing powers of keeping fish are well known and many people who have claimed to dislike animals have found themselves active aquarists over time.

Those who might want to explore an underappreciated animal might look toward snakes as an option. Though reviled by many people, snakes can make a wonderful pet and many people enjoy having them around and caring for them. Rodents are also popular among many pet owners, even though the whole of society tends to perceive them as a nuisance.

Not all of the small pet options lack fur, however. There are childhood standbys like hamsters, gerbils and guinea pigs. There are also other mammalian options in addition to dogs and cats. From rats to ferrets, there are many possibilities.

Birds. Turtles. Exotic species. Options abound. In addition, believe it or not, some people who had previously expressed their absolute disdain for dogs and cats become completely enamored by miniature breeds and find themselves changing their perspectives after being introduced to the little guys (and gals).

These alternative pet ideas work because they usually overcome the chief objectives non animal people have to keeping a pet. Those with allergies need not worry about fish fur! A person who does not like the idea of taking long walks with a dog or training it appropriately can escape those concerns while enjoying his or her turtles. Those reluctant to add an animal to the family due to space limitations need not be concerned with a teacup cat running the house!

Really, deep down inside, everyone is an animal person. The trick is matching the right animal with the right person! Most of us find comfort with a cat or dog, but others might want to consider some other possible animal friends. For those who are not excited at owning a dog or cat, miniature pet options might make a perfect alternative!

Secrets of Kitty Body Language

Saturday, February 24th, 2007

Kittens communicate in a very distinct way. Did you know that every twitch, every purr, every motion actually means something… at least to your kitten!

The key to building a devoted and caring relationship between you and your kitten is understanding how kittens communicate

Lets discuss the primary mechanisms a kitten uses to communicate.

Eyes

The eyes truly are the windows to the soul… even when you consider the souls of kittens. Kittens use their eyes to tell you what they want.

For example, if a kitten gazes at something for a few minutes, but then turns away, it is usually an indication that he recognizes the object or person, but chooses not to communicate with them for the time being.

If however, a kitten stares at something and holds its gaze for some time (and also twitches his tail and perhaps raises its fur) that is a clear indication that he feels threatened.

At times the kitten will also make an aggressive meow to indicate they are ready for combat if necessary.

Tail

Reading a kittens tail movements is not only fun its useful. A cats tail tells a lot of things about whats on their minds. One of the uses a kitten has for its tail is to demonstrate self confidence and pride.

Kittens may walk with their tails sticking straight up in the air, indicating they are having a very proud and boastful moment.

If on the other hand a kittens tail suddenly puffs out and looks bushy, and starts shaking it is usually a sign that something has frightened the kitten. When given this sign, though your urge may be to pick up your kitten, avoid doing so immediately. You might startle the kitten and end up with a harsh scratch.

Small twitches of a kittens tail can also indicate that your kitten is irritated at something. This can be for a variety of reasons, including a dirty litter box or lack of food. Be sure to check out your kittys supplies to make sure there isnt some small problem you can remedy quickly.

Purring

Purring is usually the universal body language sign kittens give off. For the most part kittens purr when they are happy, content and satisfied.

Thus, the more your kitty purrs the happier he is. Kittens love to purr when you hold them, stroke them and even brush their fur.

Learning to understand your kittens signals can help you build a long lasting and happy relationship together. If you take the time to pay attention to your kitten, youll start picking up on his unique signals quickly and swiftly.

If youre still worried, here are a few pointers that will ensure you bond with your kitten right off the bat:

* Trampling Paws - sign of affection or need for attention.

* Dilated Pupils - indicates fear or threat. Stay back initially and try to determine cause of fear.

* Arched Back - Kitten is attacking, feels threatened.

* Ears folded forward - Kitten is exploring. Slow Tail Flapping Indicates Satisfaction and Joy.

The Wire Fox Terrier

Friday, February 23rd, 2007

Of the thirty-three terrier breeds (most of which were first used for hunting of some sort and so came up as aggressive and lively), the Wire Fox Terrier has a reputation for scampishness. That is, the breed with the challenging personality that has been identified throughout its history as being as foxy as the fox it was once used to hunt.

Though beginning in the 15th century, it was the smooth-haired Fox Terrier was favored by the British to go to ground for small game animals, the sibling Wire Fox Terrier was right on its heels. By the 18th century»when the English made fox hunting the ideal sport, the hunt masters (the one assigned to kill the fox) chose terriers to be by their sides, though were dismayed that the terrier»s legs were too short to keep up with the foxhounds. This generated a great number of hunt kennels, where the smooth-haired Fox Terrier was bred, developed, and improved upon to meet the hunt masters» needs and standards and where»by the mid-18th century»the Wire Fox Terrier became an improvement on the smooth.

A cross between the smooth Fox and the rough-haired Black and Tan Terrier, the Wire Fox Terrier was now brought to the hunt, too, to be used in the hunt for fox routing. With a muscular, low-to-the-ground and compact body, the Wire Fox was an energetic and game breed (by now acknowledged as a separate breed, that is) that continued as the ideal foxer for another hundred years.

Then, in the early 1900»s, the attraction to both varieties/breeds took on a very different bent: the Smooth Fox Terrier was discovered by the general American public»in the 1920»s»on the logo for a recording company label, pictured listening to «his master»s voice.» But the Wire Fox Terrier was spotted»in 1934»playing the role of Asta, Nick and Nora»s impish pet in the Thin Man, and the Wire Fox Terrier personality (and reputation) was born.

The Wire Fox Terrier is still today lively, playful, and a little foxy. Full of peppery spunk and on the hunt for play at all times may, as some have decided, suggest a challenging (ahem»obstinate) way, but given its alertness, this also means the Wire Fox is a great watchdog and even better pet for kids.

In fact, the Wire Fox Terrier needs activity. So daily exercise and a small bit of space to romp are ideal elements in the Fox environment. Also ideal is an occasional bath for the wiry, broken haired coat and frequent brushing to prevent what little hair might mat–from the shedding that does occur.

The rest of the needs of the Wire Fox Terrier with staying powers that outlast the best fox and with the hardy and cocksure personality are simple if you are up to it»if you are up to the antics of a terrier breed that are always a surprise. Even to the Master.

Ragdoll Cats - An Unusual Cat Breed

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

The Ragdoll cat breed has an unusual history. According to one story, aliens brought this cat here; a cat that gets its name from the way it goes limp like a Ragdoll when you pick one up.

The Ragdoll cat breed originated in Riverside, California in the 1960s; the breed was founded by an eccentric woman named Ann Baker. The very first Ragdoll cat was a Persian-Birman mix named Josephine. Ragdoll cats come in a variety of colors today, including blue, bicolor, color point, torte, mink, and lynx.

The Ragdoll cat is the largest breed of domestic cat; males can weigh in over twenty pounds when fully mature. Ragdolls are registered by all of the major cat associations and recognized as a purebred cat.

Ragdoll cats are easy going and best known for their characteristic limpness when held. They have medium longhair coats and shed very little for having coats of this length. Ragdolls are very low maintenance cats; they have silky rabbit like fur and do most of their grooming themselves. Because of their size, Ragdoll cats tend to be slightly clumsy; these cats do not typically make good mousers, they are just too laid back to care about mice. Many Ragdoll cats exhibit dog-like behaviors; for example, this breed will run to the door to greet you upon returning home.

Part of what makes this cat so unusual are the stories Ann Baker told about its origins. On one account Ann Baker claimed here new breed of cat was brought here by aliens; another account states the breed was genetically engineered by the government.

Alien or government conspiracy aside, the Ragdoll has quickly become one of the most popular breeds of cat available today.

Why Buy Pet Insurance

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

If you’re wondering what the point is to paying for pet insurance then just think about all the massive claims that currently go through the courts.

It’s easy to assume that you’ll never make good use of pet insurance but with the ‘blame’ culture becoming increasingly evident over recent years its sheer folly to even consider having a pet without taking out pet insurance. Just imagine if your pet caused an accident, damaged someone else’s property or attacked someone. We all think it will never happen to us but it does happen.

Another good reason for having pet insurance is the soaring costs of veterinary care. Like most things in life veterinary science is moving on in leaps and bounds but with the new found technology there is one hell of a price tag. We all know insurance companies are out to make money and pet insurance is no different but what you need to ask yourself is if you have to come up with a few thousand pounds at short notice could you do it.

Having pet insurance is like every other insurance policy we take out. It appears on the surface to be an absolute waste of money that is until the major catastrophe occurs. Could you really handle loosing your home over a third party claim or would you be able to find the cash for major veterinary work?

I’m not saying that having pet insurance will get you out of every hole. There’s always the little question of deductibles, the small print that acts as a get out clause, the annual caps, the exclusions for pre-existing conditions and the insurance premium hike for older pets but if you do your homework, before taking out your pet insurance, the funds will be there when it really matters.

You might believe now that if veterinary treatment is too expensive you’d rather have your pet put down instead of taking out pet insurance but will you feel the same way once you’ve become attached? Also you still leave yourself wide open to that little matter of third party liability claims which is where the unexpected accident would really hurt. Isn’t it better to just opt for a really high deductible to keep the cost down rather than risk all you own?

Besides selecting the maximum level of deductibles another way of reducing the cost of pet insurance is to avoid pure bred pets. Pure bred pet insurance premiums are significantly higher than those of the basic mutt.

Also, make sure you shop around, there are loads of different pet insurance policies available and you can half the cost if you do your homework.

Humans Are Unique Project

Tuesday, February 20th, 2007

The age old question of what makes humans unique has been taken up by a new team of researchers in the “Why Are Humans Unique Project” and its principle investigator and researcher has announced the possible formation of a massive experimentation project.

In an online think tank the head researcher of this experiment states to the group in the formalization of the criteria for the project: “Now comes the hard part, establishing the threshold and boundaries which will determine the classification for this group.”

Indeed a clear and concise focus will be necessary for humankind to finally answer the question once and for all; What makes mankind unique? One of the think tank members added insult to injury in this thought process when he stated:

“Not to be a pragmatists, but wouldn’t it be better to have a gray area boundary? I mean that would be more real to the observations of life right? I mean you set your boundaries and then extend them in gray scale for data which maybe just outside the margins, but eventful enough to list, hate to put that information into the “electronic trash can” because it is always those little things that are not expected outside the boundaries which are the biggest clues and sometimes one of those little things can be the biggest finding of all, even more important that all the data discovered within.”

Indeed it appears that there are numerous examples of such in research, science and solutions to such. And it also appears actually that they are both correct, so this issue will have to be addressed but a clearly defined focus must be insured otherwise we cannot trust the results to the answers we all seek. Consider this in 2006.

Pet Care - There’s No Other Job Quite Like It

Monday, February 19th, 2007

“Pets are such agreeable friends, they ask no questions and they pass no criticisms” said George Eliot about pet animals. Pets often reciprocate the love that their masters lavish on them by demonstrating various forms of affection including licking, hickeys, even love-bites.

There’s no other job quite like keeping a pet. Pet care is in fact a permanent job, and includes the very important functions of grooming and striving to maintain good pet health care. General pet supplies could be considered a definition of useful tools for grooming and keeping your pet in good health.

Pet Supplies:

An essential list of pet supplies for purchase could include the following: pet food and food dishes, pet id tags and collars, pet medications, supplements and tonics, etc. Some other items to consider are animal carriers, pet houses and furniture, pet beds, clothes, and pet jewelry.

Online Pet Supplies:

Online pet supplies are supplies that can be purchased from pet stores over the Internet. There are numerous pet grooming product manufacturers and pet-grooming stores selling their products online through their individual official websites.

Pet Grooming supplies:

Pet grooming supplies include items such as grooming clippers, pet hair care products, soaps, shampoo and perfumes.

Pet Health Care:

Pet health care is a very important responsibility of pet ownership. For puppies and kittens, or any other four-legged pets, important treatments would include giving a hygiene bath, cleaning, combing, brushing, checking ears, paws, teeth and underside of the tongue, nail trimming, removing fleas and insects, and fixing regular meetings with a professional veterinary. A good pet owner should follow a regular schedule of grooming sessions.

Pet care can require a lot of patience. Like children, pets often require special attention. A puppy, kitten or any other pet in its infancy needs to be handled with extreme care. In particular they must be groomed properly, fed carefully, and bedded properly.

Choosing A Pet:

The process of choosing a pet is very important. Choosing a pet depends on one’s preferences, but there are still some important things that should be kept in mind. One should always choose an animal of good breed. Secondly, the pet should be healthy especially if it is still in the initial stage of its life. A healthy young pet shows good fast growth.

Pet Grooming Business:

The pet grooming business is a flourishing business today. There are numerous pet grooming schools offering the equivalent services of a pet grooming professional. People hire the services of these professional experts for the proper grooming of their pets. Professional pet grooming is becoming quite popular in United States, Canada, and European countries.
